Carpenter & Building Maintenance in Perth
From Minor Fixes to Major Repairs – We’ve Got You Covered!
Trusted Carpentry and Building Repairs Across Perth
Your Local Perth Carpenter & Maintenance Team
Kangaroo Building Works is a Byford-based team of carpenters and maintenance tradesmen working right across the Perth metropolitan area. We are a Master Builders WA member with a 4.9-star rating from more than 40 Google reviews, and most of our work comes from homeowners, property managers and small businesses who call us back when the next job comes up.
Perth is a city of very mixed housing. We work on 1950s brick-and-tile in the older inner suburbs, limestone and weatherboard closer to the coast, and newer estates through the south-east corridor where doors, frames and cabinetry start to move after a few hot summers. No two jobs are the same, so we quote on what is actually in front of us rather than off a price list.
We take on the small jobs most builders will not bother with, as well as the bigger repairs that need a qualified tradesman. That might be a single sticking door one morning and a deck rebuild the next. If a job turns out to be outside what we do, we will say so straight away rather than waste your time.
Every job is quoted in writing before we start, we turn up when we say we will, and we clean up behind us. No surprises on the invoice.
Carpentry and building repairs we handle in Perth
Most of the Perth jobs we are called out to fall into one of these areas:
- Doors and windows – hanging new doors, easing and realigning doors that stick, replacing damaged jambs, locks and hardware, and repairing timber window frames.
- Decking and pergolas – new decks, replacing rotted boards and bearers, and restoring pergola and patio posts that have gone soft at the base.
- Structural and framing repairs – wall framing, roof timbers, floor joists and bearers, and making good after termite or water damage.
- Ceilings and cornices – sagging ceilings, water-stained sheeting, cornice repairs and full ceiling replacement.
- Skirting, architraves and trim – replacing damaged trim and matching existing profiles in older Perth homes.
- Cabinetry and flat pack – kitchen and laundry cabinet repairs, hinge and drawer runner replacement, flat pack assembly and installation.
- Fencing and gates – timber and Colorbond fence repairs, gates that drag or will not latch, and retaining wall sleepers.
- Property maintenance – scheduled maintenance for rentals, strata and commercial sites, plus pre-sale and end-of-lease repair lists.
- Emergency make safe – securing a property after storm damage, impact or a break-in. See our emergency make safe page.
Perth suburbs we cover
We are based in Byford and cover the whole Perth metropolitan area, with most of our work through the southern and south-eastern suburbs: Armadale, Kelmscott, Gosnells, Thornlie, Maddington, Canning Vale, Cannington, Victoria Park, Belmont, Bentley, Melville, Booragoon, Cockburn, Fremantle, Mundijong and Serpentine Jarrahdale. We also travel south to Rockingham and Mandurah. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.
What Perth conditions do to a building
Perth gets long dry summers and short wet winters, and that cycle is hard on timber and on anything fixed to the outside of a building. The jobs we are called out to repeat themselves year after year:
- Summer heat and movement – timber doors, frames and decking boards dry out, shrink and twist. A door that closed perfectly in July starts catching in January.
- Winter storm fronts – the fronts that come through between May and September bring down branches, lift patio sheeting and drive water into gaps around windows and eaves.
- Reticulation spray – a sprinkler hitting the same wall or post every night will rot the base of it. It is one of the most common causes of soft timber we find in Perth gardens.
- Sandy soils – posts, footings and retaining sleepers move more in Perth sand than people expect, which shows up as gates that drag and gaps opening above the skirting.
- Older housing stock – the inner suburbs are full of homes 50 to 80 years old where trim profiles, door sizes and framing timbers are nothing like today’s stock sizes, so repairs have to be matched by hand.
Catching these early is almost always cheaper than waiting. A door that is only catching is a half-hour job; the same door left for two winters can mean a new jamb and a patched floor.
